History
The Child Abuse Prevention Project (CAPP), located at the
University of Florida, College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics,
has been serving the area of North Central Florida, since 1983. CAPP provides
a variety of services such as parent education and support, community
education and training, and consultation. These services are provided
by licensed professionals and paraprofessionals whose goal is to enhance
the nurturing skills of parents and help to bring awareness to the community
about the needs of children and families.
CAPP, in conjunction with The Partnership for Strong Families and the
Marion County Child Advocacy Center, developed the Prevention Task Force
initiative to facilitate strategies within the North Central Florida community
to prevent child abuse and neglect by impacting parents and their parenting
practices.
These volunteer and community based Prevention Task Forces
will gather information about community needs with regard to family support
and work towards goals that are set by the local group. This initiative
is designed with the philosophy that the local community knows best what
needs to be done to support families, knows the resources and gaps, and
who best to do the work that needs to be done.
CAPP serves as a catalyst for the local community; providing
expertise and resources. As a team we can build a stronger community by
increasing awareness and community support to aid in family support, which
is the key to child abuse prevention.
